You don’t sprint through culture change

Do you have what it takes to run a culture-changing marathon?

A senior executive at a community bank recently told me about the process their bank went through to define their culture.

They came with a new vision statement and company values, and…

Nothing changed.

At least not right away.

But they kept at it. Kept communicating what it meant and how they expected it to inform behavior.

And after three years, for the first time, an employee walked into the office of the CEO to say that they finally understood the vision.

Three years.

And it was another three years before a customer said essentially the same thing to the CEO.

What finally clicked for the employee and the customer was seeing the culture modeled. Once they saw actions that were aligned with the culture, the definition finally made sense.

It would be nice if culture changed with the stroke of a pen. But there’s no such thing as modeling quickly. As the old saying goes, it’s a marathon, not a sprint.
