The business lesson from the Super Bowl

I’m not a big football fan.

That said, I couldn’t help but notice a pertinent lesson in the results of the Super Bowl on Sunday.

I can’t be the only one who saw the parallels between the L.A. Rams victory and the success of organizations that stage remarkable customer experiences.

That’s right, both are team sports.

But I thought the story of Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford was particularly telling.

After 12 years of toiling with the Detroit Lions, where he never won a playoff game, he moves to Los Angeles and in the first year wins the Super Bowl.

Huh. How does that happen?

Teamwork. And it’s not just the players on the field, it’s the entire organization, hundreds of people all working toward the same goal, with the same vision.

Now, in professional football, the vision is pretty clear: Win the Super Bowl.

Nobody can forget that.

Still, it requires constant vigilance and training up and down the roster.

It’s an old story, right? The quarterback, running backs and receivers get all the glory and end up dancing around for the cameras. But it’s the big boys in the trenches that make the difference.

Stafford’s great decision didn’t have anything to do with throwing the ball. He just went to a better team – a better organization.

I may not watch a lot of American football (I do however watch a lot of the other football) and the concepts remain the same.

It’s also the same in your business. If your team is focused on a common purpose, trained for their jobs, no matter how inglorious, you won’t achieve the results that you want.

The Lions can’t seem to figure that out.

Matthew Stafford did.

Give me a call if you want to develop your players into a winning team.
